EAST PEORIA, Ill. – East Peoria residents will be able to start open burning earlier than usual this fall in response to community demand and current weather conditions.
The city has moved the start of the fall open burning season to October 1, running through November 30.
Exceptions
Burning will not be permitted on the following dates:
- Halloween, October 31
- Thanksgiving holiday period, Wednesday, November 25 through Sunday, November 29
- Any dates the East Peoria Fire Department deems unsafe based on weather conditions
Rules and Requirements
Only dry leaves, brush and landscape waste may be burned. Burning other materials is prohibited. Residents must follow these guidelines:
- Burning is permitted only during daylight hours on non-windy days
- A burning ban takes effect when sustained winds or gusts reach 10 miles per hour or more
- Materials must be burned in small piles
- A responsible adult must supervise the fire at all times
- A water source must be nearby
- The fire must be completely extinguished when finished
- Burning in the street is prohibited
Residents are encouraged to check the weather forecast before burning and to notify neighbors in advance, as smoke can affect those with certain health conditions.
