PEORIA, Ill. – Illinois American Water will begin its annual maintenance program in the Peoria area Sunday, which could temporarily affect water pressure, color, taste and odor for some customers.

The work begins October 11 and will continue through the end of the month. It includes flushing water mains, testing fire hydrants and temporarily changing the way the water is treated.

While crews flush the system, customers could experience a temporary drop in water pressure or discolored water. Illinois American Water recommends avoiding laundry if discoloration occurs and briefly running cold water until it clears.

The utility will also temporarily switch to a form of chlorine known as “free chlorine,” which does not contain ammonia and is commonly used during flushing. Customers may notice a chlorine taste or odor in their water during the change. Illinois American Water says that is expected and is not a cause for concern.

The maintenance will affect communities served directly by Illinois American Water in Peoria, Bartonville, West Peoria, Rome and Woodland Heights, along with surrounding areas.

It will also include wholesale water customers in Dunlap, Mapleton, Hanna City, Kingston Mines, T-L Rural Water District and Deluxe Lake Estates in Bellevue.

Illinois American Water says customers will receive notifications about the work based on their communication preferences.
