PEKIN, Ill. (25News Now) – The Tazewell County Veterans Assistance Commission is adding staff and services for the more than 7,000 veterans living in the county, as officials say demand for help is growing.

Superintendent CJ Pulcher hired four new staff members to help veterans access benefits, pay bills, and find jobs.

The commission is also working to add transportation and partner with local businesses for employment.

Pulcher said the goal is to go beyond temporary financial help.

“It’s one thing to receive assistance monthly, but are we truly helping the veteran out? We’re looking at giving a hand up versus a hand out here. We wanna help those veterans keep that pride that they’ve worked for and earned through their service to this great nation,” Pulcher said.

Budget increase sought

The commission is also seeking a budget increase to about $750,000.

Veterans looking for help can visit the commission at 414 Court St. in Pekin, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
