PEORIA (25News Now) – Peoria firefighters have received a new $10,000 training system donated by Peoria Industrial Piping Company, also known as PIPCO, to help prepare them for building emergencies.
The Peoria Fire Training Academy recently conducted training on a portable standpipe system donated by the company.
Standpipe systems are commonly found in high-rise buildings, warehouses and apartment buildings. The pipe system delivers water for hose connections and, in combined systems, automatic sprinklers.
Roland Tenley, division chief of training with the Peoria Fire Department, said the portable system lets firefighter recruits learn and practice using different hose sizes. The new setup also helps prepare them to respond to emergencies in these structures.
“The firefighters can actually see that (the standpipe), so they know the importance of every little detail if we’re operating in one of these structures in a standpipe system,” he said.
Tenley added the new system will be used in every fire academy class.
He added each academy class has about 18 recruits, and said nearly 184 firefighters are expected to train with the equipment over the next six months.
