(From Bradley University) – Freshman guard Lasha Petree has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week for the fourth time this season according to an announcement by the league office Monday afternoon.
The first four-time Valley Newcomer of the Week winner in program history, Petree helped lead Bradley Women’s Basketball to a pair of home victories last week, averaging a team-high 16.0 points per game on 53% shooting and was 8-for-12 from three-point range (67%). She also averaged 2.0 rebounds, 1.0 assist, 1.5 blocks and 1.5 steals per game.
In Friday’s 81-80 comeback victory over Indiana State, Petree took over the game down the stretch by scoring 13 points in a 46-second span. With Bradley trailing 78-63 closing on 2:30 to play, she hit four three-pointers during the spurt and also had three steals during that stretch as she helped Bradley rally for the one-point win. Petree later knocked down the game-winning free throw with 7.2 seconds remaining as she scored 14 points in the final 2:30 of the contest and had 16 of her 18 points in the second half. She finished with 18 points, three rebounds, one assist, two blocks and three steals in just 18 minutes off the bench. Petree was 5-for-10 from the field and 4-for-6 from beyond the arc against the Sycamores.
She followed up her dramatic performance with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting in Sunday’s win over Evansville. Once again, she made 4-of-6 three-pointers and also tallied one rebound, one assist and a block in the victory to help Bradley match its MVC win total from 2017-18.
Petree is third on the team in scoring at 12.9 points per game and her 283 points this season rank as the eighth-best season total by a Bradley freshman. She has made 43 three-pointers which is fourth among Bradley freshman marks. Petree has helped Bradley (17-5 overall, 7-4 MVC) to its best win total since 2011-12 (18-16) and the Braves have already matched their MVC win total from last season with seven conference games remaining.
Petree is the first four-time MVC Newcomer of the Week selection since Becca Hittner from Drake in 2016-17.
Bradley Women’s Basketball opens a two-game MVC road swing Friday with a 6 p.m. game at Southern Illinois.
