SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Some of the same truck drivers that were a part of the COVID-19 protests in Canada, are now making their way into Illinois.
There are reports they are in parts of eastern and Southern Illinois, en route north to Chicago.
“Our agency is having to be very adaptable, and are moving on the fly with a lot of these issues,” said Sgt. Joey Watson, Illinois State Police. “We’re looking to create an environment where they can express their First Amendment rights. And, we’re also trying to create an environment where the roadways are safe and people are in compliance with the law.”
Watson says most of the members of the Freedom Convoy have been in contact with State Police, while there may be some groups that haven’t.
“A lot of the intelligence that we have suggests that there is going to be convoys of different sizes and origins that are scattered across the entire state, that would be throughout the weekend,” said Watson.
Watson says nevertheless, there may be times in various parts of the state of traffic congestion and some delays.
