SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – It’s now easier for people born in Illinois to change the gender on their birth certificate.
Governor J.B. Pritzker on Friday signed HB0009 into law, which makes the process easier. Previously, individuals needed required certification from a health care professional that they had gone under gender reassignment surgery or other clinical treatment.
Now, individuals just need to sign a statement that affirms their gender identity or intersex condition.
In a statement, Pritzker said, “Here in Illinois, we recognize that gender transition is a personal journey that doesn’t always follow a prescriptive medical path, but still deserves to be honored legally.”
The legislation also waives fees for the process to those on release from parole, homeless individuals, and youth in DCFS care. The fine was usually between $10-$25. Domestic violence shelters listed as a residence will be given four waivers per year for residents seeking to change their birth certificate.
State Senator Laura Fine (D-Glenview) said making the process easier sends a strong message of support to those in the trans community.
“We have witnessed extreme attacks against this community throughout our country; legislatively, emotionally, and physically. In Illinois, with this legislation, we are stating that everyone is welcome here,” Fine said.
