PEORIA, Ill. – Illinois State Police is taking over the investigation into an early-morning shooting incident Sunday that injured both a resident and a Peoria Police officer.

Peoria Police say it happened around 5:20 a.m. near Griswold and Hayes.

As officers were talking with a woman about a male who didn’t want to leave a residence, a police spokeswoman says an allegedly aggressive dog approached the officers, causing the officers to shoot.

The dog died and both the woman and an officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say because the officers discharged their guns, State Police has to investigate.

No word on any arrests.
