MORTON, Ill. – Police departments across Illinois are spending their Friday morning climbing up to roofs for a good cause.
Friday is the 22nd annual Cop On A Rooftop fundraising event for Special Olympics Illinois. Officers climb up to the rooftops of Dunkin’ locations across Illinois for the event.
Morton Police Detective Sergeant Mike Foster says going up to the top creates awareness for the Special Olympics.
“People see police cars and lights going on, they’re looking to see what’s going on, we can wave at them, they see us up there, and the more times we do this, the more years we’re on this, the more people know,” Foster said. “We get a lot of semi drivers, a lot of people are honking at us, and it’s a good time.”
Foster says the Morton Police Department has participated in the event for the past 7-8 years. He says the community enjoys interacting with the officers during the event, as well as moms and families.
Foster says Morton Police raised around $5,000 last year. He says the money goes towards helping run events at the Special Olympics, as well as housing and travel for the athletes.
Foster says the statewide goal for this year is around $1.2 million.
