CANTON, Ill. – If you’re cleaning up from last week’s flooding in Canton, the city is trying to make things a little easier on you.

Canton has declared a state of emergency, which means you can start getting that flood debris out to the curb right now without worrying about those usual bulk item fees.

Here is how you need to handle it:

  • Keep it separate: Pile your flood debris away from any yard waste. The city is using different trucks to haul them away, so mixing them up will only slow down the cleanup.
  • Be smart about carpets: If you have waterlogged carpet, cut it up and roll it tight. It makes it much easier for crews to load.
  • Appliances: Keep in mind that city workers still can’t haul away appliances, even though they’re waiving other fees. You’ll have to find another way to dispose of those.
  • Need a pickup? If you have a massive pile of debris, call the Public Works office at 647-5022 and leave your address. That helps them plan the routes more efficiently.

Make sure you’re taking photos and keeping records of all that damage. You don’t need to send that to the city right now, but you’ll want it handy if you’re applying for any future disaster assistance.

Keep an eye on the city’s Facebook page for updates on when they might need that information.
