Street closures begin near St. Mary’s Cathedral for Sheen Beatification events

PEORIA, Ill. — If you drive through downtown Peoria near St. Mary’s Cathedral, plan for extra travel time and detours this week.

Portions of Northeast Madison Avenue and Green Street are closed starting Monday, September 21, as the Catholic Diocese of Peoria hosts Masses, tours, and events for the Beatification of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen.

The specific closures include:

• NE Madison Avenue: The 600 block, from Hancock Street to Green Street.
• Green Street: From NE Madison Avenue to roughly halfway to NE Monroe Street.

Roads remain closed until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 26.

The main Beatification ceremony takes place Thursday, September 24, at the Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis. St. Mary’s Cathedral will hold local Masses of Thanksgiving on Friday, September 25, followed by additional Masses and a Byzantine Divine Liturgy on Saturday, September 26.
