PEORIA, Ill. – GFL and local community leaders marked the opening of a new waste transfer station in Peoria with a ribbon cutting Wednesday.

The facility, located at 4349 W. Southport Road, began serving residents in June and is part of a long-term agreement addressing waste disposal needs in Peoria and Peoria County.

The 13,500-square-foot facility handles about 600 to 650 tons of waste each day and employs four people full-time.

Peoria County residents can also use the facility through the county’s Free Load Program and an on-site recycling drop-off, subject to program requirements.

The agreement includes household hazardous waste collection events and waste collection options for people living in unincorporated areas of Peoria County.

Peoria County Board Chairman Jimmy Dillon said Wednesday’s ribbon cutting followed years of work on the project.
