EAST PEORIA, Ill. – A four-legged member of the East Peoria Police Department has some new protection while on the job.

The department announced Friday that K9 Luna has received a bullet- and stab-resistant vest thanks to a donation from the nonprofit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.

The vest is embroidered with the message, “In memory of Detective Bob Vester.”

Vested Interest in K9s is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing protective body armor and other assistance to law enforcement dogs across the country.

Founded in 2009, the organization has provided more than 6,677 protective vests to police K9s in all 50 states, valued at approximately $6.9 million.

The custom-fitted vests are made in the United States and certified by the National Institute of Justice. Each vest is valued at approximately $1,800, weighs between four and five pounds and comes with a five-year warranty.

The nonprofit provides vests to eligible law enforcement dogs that are at least 20 months old and actively working with a law enforcement or related agency.

Those interested in supporting the organization can sponsor a vest with a $1,050 donation.
