SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — It’s a drug settlement worth $26 billion.

Attorney General Kwame Raoul said Friday that final approval of the national opioid settlement with drug companies like Johnson & Johnson, Cardinal and McKesson, will net Illinois $760 million.

Raoul said the deal also includes some safeguards.

“For instance, there’s a clearing house that makes sure that not too many opioids are being delivered to a particular pharmacy, that might be a bad-acting pharmacy,” Raoul said.

The money from the settlement with the drug companies will be used to fight the opioid epidemic and will be dispersed to states and local governments included in the agreement during the second quarter of 2022.

It’s the second largest multi-state agreement in U-S history.

“The opioid epidemic has destroyed countless lives and families throughout our state, and it’s devastated communities. It’s imperative the researched reach these areas and be used to abate the problem,” Raoul said.
