When it comes to the mail in DNA tests, 23andMe and AncestryDNA seem to be the big two.
23andMe was cool, because not only did I match with Cheryl, the kit I spat in gave health results too.
But truthfully, more people take the AncestryDNA test because well, it’s cheaper!
More people…the chance for more relatives.
So what the heck…Let’s spit again!
Off goes tube #2, and up goes this picture on the Mix1069 Facebook Page.

Apparently, my Mom’s biological first cousin, Della Burks is some kind of celebrity in Manito. The picture garnered a bunch of people just stopping by to post “Hey, It’s Della”.
One post stuck out to me. Why? Because I’m a Facebook Reconnaissance Director?
That’s total bull for, I was stalking everyone who commented on that post.
For starters, a lot of them were biological family I’d never met on my Mom’s Mothers side, so I added them as Facebook friends. But this one particular poster was unique. Based on the notes and documents from my Grandma Rowell, this special lady’s maiden name was the same as my assumed biological grandfather. Her name is Diane.
For the sake of anonymity, let’s call my assumed biological grandfather, ROBERT.
Just a few days prior to breaking the news to Diane, I had reached out to Robert’s niece and nephew and informed them of the exciting news! You have a cousin: It’s a girl. Congrats. I provided them with all the information my Grandma Rowell had given us. But they were CONVINCED that their Uncle Robert, absolutely, positively, without a shadow of doubt could NOT be the father.
Well, alright then. I encouraged and asked them to take an AncestryDNA test too.
Robert’s niece took the test.
Back to Diane. Come to find out she is Robert’s cousin. This family was a tough crew to crack! It literally took me 3 hours to convince Diane that it MAY be possible that Robert fathered a baby and nobody knew. I mean, he was a young guy. Stuff happens. Right?
She thought about it, and after a brief shock period, welcomed me as great friend AND as family. She’s always been interested in genealogy, so she thought my search was really cool. Her son took an AncestryDNA test too, just for fun, so we could bask in the positive family results together.
Their tests results came back. NO MATCH.
They were all right.
I felt like I was living a real life taping of Maury Povich. The man who you thought is NOT THE FATHER!
If Robert’s NOT….Who IS my grandfather?
It was time for my Mom to take an AncestryDNA test too.
