TREMONT, Ill. – The Tazewell County Board on Wednesday approved a new Animal Control Building, with only one “no” vote.
The winning bid, for P.J. Hoerr proposed new metal construction, while three other bids would have been wood frame.
Ahead of the vote, District 1 Rep. Joe Woodrow asked if there wasn’t a cheaper option.
“I understand that the metal building would be arguably a better alternative as far as longevity. Would not the linear building, the $2.8 million, still serve the function, probably for all of our lifetimes?,” Woodrow asked.
The resolution approved by the board says steel construction would eliminate concerns about wear and tear on a wood building, with regularly scheduled power washing.
The new facility will be located on Tazewell County’s Tremont campus, and will have a separate HVAC system for quarantined animals, more office space and additional onsite adoption rooms.
The nearly $4 million construction costs will be paid for with the county’s Capital Improvement Plan and Animal Control funds.
Construction of the new Animal Control facility is expected to be completed by January 2026.
