WASHINGTON, Ill. –  A cannabis dispensary has been approved by the Washington City Council.

Alderman Bobby Martin was in favor of the measure, explaining that a dispensary could help prevent illegal usage.

“There’s an argument to be made that this would lower the amount of illegal marijuana in Washington, where at least this is regulated,” Martin said.

Aldermen Moss, Sluder, and McIntyre voted against the proposal, citing reasons which included that the dispensary was for recreational cannabis use, not medical.

McIntyre stressed that he was not judging anyone’s beliefs or usage, stating, “What you do in your own home is what you choose to do in your own home,” despite agreeing that there was “money to be made” by having the dispensary in Washington.

Zeplin Enterprises recently applied for a special use permit for a dispensary location near Centennial and McClugage.

Washington city code was amended in 2019 to allow for up to six adult-use cannabis dispensaries within city limits.
