PEORIA, Ill. – A man has been convicted for his role in a shooting last August at a Peoria apartment complex.

The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says 30-year-old John Earl Nichols was found guilty on Thursday of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Felon.

The shooting occurred the evening of August 16th, 2025, where police found a man with a gunshot wound to the leg in the area of the Cityscape Apartment Complex.

The victim stated that an unknown male attempted to take his watch before being shot.

During the trial, a former resident of the complex testified that Nichols shot the victim, and saw him flee the scene while pushing a man in a wheelchair.  Surveillance footage from the complex corroborated her testimony.  The video reportedly shows Nichols pushing the victim to the ground and shooting him, before fleeing the scene while pushing the man in a wheelchair.

Prosecutors say the man in the wheelchair did not cooperate with the investigation.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 15th.
