PEORIA, Ill. – The Republican challenger for Illinois governor says the latest state budget continues a “tax and spend” strategy by Democrats.

“Over the last eight years of Pritzker, it’s just been tax upon tax upon tax,” said Darren Bailey.  “Your residents are going to be taxed on their points, on their credit cards.  I mean, these people cannot get enough money to waste in Illinois, and it simply has to stop.”

Bailey made his comments before being one of the guest speakers at Monday night’s Peoria and Tazewell Counties Republican Lincoln Day Dinner.  The other featured speakers were 17th District Congressional candidate Dillan Vancil, and U.S. Senate candidate Don Tracy.

Bailey reacted to the latest state budget that was passed in the early morning hours of Monday.  The around $56 billion spending plan is the largest in the state’s history.

Bailey says Illinois taxpayers have to live within their means, and wants the state government to do the same.  He adds that people in the state may not even know where the money in the budget is going to.

That’s why Bailey says he will implement a financial audit on his first day, if elected.  Bailey says that will expose where money is wasted

Bailey claims Gov. Pritzker had an opportunity over the years to get the budget in order, but failed to do so.  He says a ripple effect of that is the chance that the Chicago Bears move to Hammond, Ind.

Bailey says “the Bears need to stay in Illinois,” but adds that it cannot come at the expense of property tax relief for Illinois residents.  He does say it is fair to concern, but adds that the state cannot really offer it because the state is “broke.”
