SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – A number of Central Illinois fire departments are receiving a portion of $6 million in grant money from the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office.

The Small Equipment Grant Program provides up to $26,000 to fire departments for the purchase of small firefighting and ambulance equipment.

Local recipients include:

  • Peoria Heights, Washington, Cincinnati, and Germantown Hills are each getting the maximum payout of $26,000.
  • Schaeferville is getting just shy of that, at $25,971.
  • West Peoria is bringing in $25,238.
  • Tremont 702 is getting $23,898.
  • Dunlap is receiving $21,980.
  • Mackinaw is getting $14,595.
  • And the Village of Metamora is getting $12,790.

State Fire Marshal Michele Pankow says they hear constantly about the challenges these departments face.

This is just the state’s way of saying they recognize the struggle and are trying to make sure our first responders aren’t left holding the bag when it comes to keeping the community protected.
