PEORIA, Ill. –Monday is Labor Day. All government offices, schools, banks, and the post office are all closed, as well as many other local businesses.
The first Labor Day was celebrated on September 5th, 1882 in New York City.
The Department of Labor says the holiday is the annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers.
