Three steps to managing our emotions:
· Stop
A signal to our brain, to:
“hang on”
“pause”
“wait”
“freeze”
· Name our Feeling
Are we feeling angry . . . embarrassed . . . frustrated?
· Calm Down
Deep Breathing
Visual Imagery
Positive Self Talk – “It will be okay.” “I can handle this.”
Physical Activity – jog, play basketball, exercise, etc.
Meditate
Journaling
Relaxing Activities – read, garden, walk, listen to music, etc.
Art
If we don’t “STOP”, “NAME OUR FEELING” AND “CALM DOWN” what might happen? (We may do or say something mean or hurtful)
These actions help us slow down and think through the situation so we are able to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively.
