PEORIA, Ill. – A Peoria man accused of beating and detaining his girlfriend over several hours has now been indicted on an attempted murder charge.

21-year-old Johnnie Chiaravalle was indicted on Tuesday on one count of Attempted First Degree Murder by a Peoria County grand jury.

The incident reportedly occurred at an East Bluff home on April 13th.

Court documents allege that Chiaravalle strangled his girlfriend with his hands.  Prosecutors previously alleged that Chiaravalle also struck her in the face, head, and body, and threw knives at her.

Chiaravalle reportedly claims someone else caused the injuries while he was asleep.

Chiaravalle is scheduled for an arraignment on July 6th.
