EAST PEORIA, Ill. – East Peoria’s Fire Chief wants everyone to enjoy the 4th of July and America’s 250th birthday, but he wants them to do it in a responsible manner.

“In the State of Illinois there are certain fireworks that are not permitted, and we just ask that people follow the laws…and use some safety when they’re using the fireworks that are approved in the State of Illinois,” says East Peoria Fire Chief Bobby Zimmerman.

Zimmerman says when it comes to personal fireworks, anything that flies in the air is illegal. But, you can use sparklers, party poppers, caps and smoke bombs safely.

“At the 4th of July, or within your neighborhood, the fireworks that you see that you’re like ‘that’s a big firework’, that’s not permitted in the State of Illinois,” Zimmerman says.

Children love sparklers, but the chief says they should never be allowed to handle them unsupervised.
