PEORIA, Ill. – A man will spend a decade in prison after a Peoria County jury convicted him on two counts of Child Pornography earlier this year.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says 23-year-old Carlos Montoya-Bustamante must also register as a sex offender for life after the 10-year sentence imposed on Wednesday. The sentences are to be served consecutively.
Montoya-Bustamante was found guilty in February of taking videos and photos of himself in sexual acts with a minor relative.
Prosecutors had asked for a 25 year sentence, the maximum allowed by law. The defense argued for the minimum sentence, arguing that Montoya-Bustamante had no prior convictions.
The victim testified at the sentencing hearing that the effects of the abuse have affected her decisions, relationships, and how she perceives herself and the world. She continued to say that she is working on healing, and asked the court to recognize the suffering she has endured.
Chief Judge Katherine Gorman refused to impose the minimum sentence, stating taking videos of people in such a manner must be stopped.
