PEORIA, Ill. – A Peoria-area Congressman says there has to be consequences for Iran’s violations of a ceasefire agreement.

The United States and Iran have traded strikes again this week, with President Trump signaling a ceasefire deal in place may be no more.

While in Peoria on Thursday, 16th District Congressman Darin LaHood (R-Dunlap) says Iran continues to not abide by rules and structures, especially ones set in the recent Memorandum of Understanding by attacking cargo ships trying to get through the Strait of Hormuz.

LaHood called the strikes this week defensive ones to protect American interests and allies in the Middle East.

While LaHood has called for a wind down to the war, he admits figuring out how could be difficult.

“When you’re dealing with a regime that is run by religious zealots and mullahs and people that are sponsors of terrorism, how do you hold them accountable?  And we’re still trying to work through that,” LaHood said.

LaHood says the goal and hope is to stay with the Memorandum, but the interests of America must be considered as well.
