PEORIA, Ill. – The St. Jude Memphis to Peoria Run returns this week for its 45th year.
179 runners and a huge support staff will hit the road Tuesday morning, bound for the research hospital that’s been saving young lives for decades.
In 1982, doctors told the run’s co-founder Mike McCoy he’d never see cancer patients able to run with them. But, that’s been happening for 25 years now.
“When you consider that they took the average person that lives from cancer treatment from 8 percent to now over 75 percent as an average, and A-L-L, the most common form, to almost 90 percent, that’s huge,” McCoy says.
He tells WMBD’s “Greg and Dan”, a total of 2,500 runners will hit the pavement this week raising money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
To date, St. Jude Runs has raised over $94 million for cancer research.
All of the St. Jude runs will converge on the Peoria Civic Center Saturday afternoon, ahead of the St. Jude telethon on WEEK-TV.
