PEORIA, Ill. – The Peoria Park District has earned a national accreditation held by fewer than 2% of park and recreation agencies across the country.

The district announced Thursday it has received accreditation through the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies, or CAPRA.

The program evaluates park and recreation agencies on national standards covering areas including planning, financial management, programs and services, facilities, public safety and overall operations.

“This recognition belongs to our entire District,” Peoria Park District Executive Director Emily Cahill said. “CAPRA asks us to look closely at how we serve our community, how we use our resources, and how we can continue to improve.”

To earn the accreditation, the Park District completed a self-assessment, provided documentation showing its compliance with national standards and underwent a peer review by other park and recreation professionals.

Cahill said the process involved employees across the district reviewing practices and procedures and identifying areas for continued improvement.

CAPRA is administered through the National Recreation and Park Association and is the country’s only national accreditation program for park and recreation agencies.

Accredited agencies must go through the process again every five years to maintain the designation.
