PEORIA, Ill. (25News Now) – A week after meeting with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican, the head of the Catholic Diocese of Peoria is offering prayers as the Holy Father undergoes surgery in the coming days.

The 71-year-old Illinois-born pontiff announced Sunday he will undergo surgery to remove a small and well-localized nodule on his lung.

On his Facebook page, Bishop Louis Tylka posted a photo of his meeting with the pope and released the following statement:

“As the Holy Father undergoes surgery, I ask the Diocese to join me in prayer for Pope Leo XIV. We pray for his medical care team, his health and wellbeing as well as a speedy recovery.”

On Oct. 5, Tylka and Msgr. Jason Gray, executive director of the Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Foundation, presented Leo with a relic of the Blessed Sheen. Thousands of people gathered just days earlier in St. Louis for the beatification of Sheen, who was born and raised in Central Illinois. The beatification is considered a step towards sainthood.
