EAST PEORIA, Ill. (25 News) – An East Peoria runner was among hundreds of Americans who have helped carry a single U.S. flag across the country as Relay for America passed through Central Illinois on Sunday.

The relay began at the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and is traveling more than 3,000 miles through 15 states before ending at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on July 4, America’s 250th birthday. Nicole Roberts, an East Peoria mom and avid runner, was selected to carry the flag during the relay’s stop through the Peoria and Bloomington areas.

“I felt so honored to do it,” said Roberts. “I said the pledge of allegiance and a prayer as I was carrying it and it was just amazing. An amazing experience to be a part of something historical that has never happened before on the 250th anniversary of our great country.”

Roberts said that her daughter found out about the group while scrolling on Instagram one day.

On Saturday while shopping, Roberts and her daughter realized Relay for America would be coming to Central Illinois, prompting Roberts to register last-minute for a chance to participate.
