PEORIA, Ill. – Bradley University has been awarded a $3 million federal grant to expand academic support programs and incorporate artificial intelligence education into the student experience.

The multi-year grant comes through the U.S. Department of Education’s Strengthening Institutions Program.

Bradley says the funding will be used to expand academic support, improve advising and accessibility services and help identify students who may need additional assistance earlier in their college careers.

The university also plans to use the funding for course redesign and expanded Supplemental Instruction programs, with the broader goal of improving student retention, academic performance and degree completion.

Artificial intelligence will make up another major part of the initiative. Bradley plans to incorporate AI literacy into first-year and student success programs, including teaching students how to responsibly use AI, evaluate AI-generated material, develop effective prompts and recognize misinformation.

The university will also establish an AI Fellows Program and provide faculty and staff with professional development focused on the ethical and effective use of the technology.

Bradley President James Shadid says the grant will allow the university to strengthen the support available to students throughout their education.

The university says the grant will also support expanded accessibility services and additional training related to the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Bradley plans to develop the programs with the goal of continuing them beyond the federal grant period.
